    Ground Beef & Potato Gratin (Easy Comfort Casserole)

     Ingredients (Serves 4)

    • 600 g potatoes
    • 400 g ground beef
    • 1 onion, finely chopped
    • 2 garlic cloves, minced
    • 200 ml heavy cream
    • 100 g shredded cheese (Emmental or mozzarella)
    • 2 tbsp oil
    • Salt and black pepper
    • 1 tsp paprika (optional)

     Instructions

    1. Prepare the Potatoes

    Peel and slice the potatoes into thin rounds.
    Pre-cook them in salted boiling water for 10 minutes (they should still be firm).
    Drain and set aside.

    2. Cook the Beef

    Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
    Sauté the onion and garlic until fragrant.
    Add the ground beef and cook until nicely browned.
    Season with salt, pepper, and paprika if using.

    Tip: Proper browning (Maillard reaction) adds deep, rich flavor.

    3. Assemble the Gratin

    In a baking dish:

    • Add a layer of potatoes
    • Add a layer of beef
    • Drizzle a little cream

    Repeat the layers.
    Finish with the remaining cream and top with shredded cheese.

    4. Bake

    Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
    Bake for 35–45 minutes until golden and bubbly.

    The top should be beautifully browned and slightly crispy.
